Renting a self storage unit is a great way to store belongings that you do not intend to use regularly or at the present time. When planning a move or simply when organizing household goods and personal belongings, renting a storage space on a monthly basis can help you gain access to your property and maintain organization in your life. While you probably recognize the importance of comparing prices and obtaining insurance for your belongings, there is more to consider. Here are five tips for obtaining the right solution for your self storage needs:

1. Reserve Your Self Storage in Advance

While most self storage facilities do not require an advance reservation, it does help to reserve your unit in advance. If you know you'll be needing a unit on a particular move-in date, allowing yourself a week or two in advance may offer you the best selection. It can also save you time and hassle. It's a good idea to inquire from the facility how much time in advance you can reserve a unit. In most cases, you may rent online, by telephone or in person.

2. Assess Your Needs, So You Obtain the Right Sized Unit

Renting a unit that is too large for your needs may mean money wasted, as the rental cost will often be decided by the size of the storage space. However, you may want to rent a unit with more space than you need at the present time, in case you decide to store more belongings later on. On average, self storage units may be anywhere from 5'x5' to 10'x30'. You may also find smaller options, such as locker sized units, or be able to rent extra large units in advance.

If you simply need to store a few personal belongings, such as boxes, toys and materials, it makes sense to opt for the smaller unit. Conversely, the large units are optimal for storing large equipment and inventory.

3. Decide On an Indoor or Outdoor Unit

To make the best decision, consider the weather and environment. If you want the storage unit to be protected from the elements, an indoor unit would obviously be best. These units are often housed in multi-story facilities, equipped with elevators. However, if you prefer the convenience of a drive-up option, the outdoor unit might work best for you.

4. Consider a Climate Controlled Unit for Long-Term Storage

Heat and humidity may eventually affect the condition of your belongings. If you're storing valuables, such as antiques or treasured collectibles, you might want to choose a unit that is climate controlled. These units are typically more expensive to rent, but they are either heated or air conditioned to maintain an optimal temperature control. Remember, freezing and thawing often causes wood and metal to warp or crack. Your leather and fabric will be less likely to fade or become discolored in a climate controlled unit as well. If you have items with monetary or sentimental value to you, climate control is the way to go.

5. Designate an Access Code for an Additional Person

Typically, the person renting a self storage unit will be given an access code. This code enables that person access to his or her unit. In most cases, you are not limited to one access code for one person entry. While you may restrict access to only yourself, this is not always the best option. It may be a good idea to create an access code for an additional person, such as a spouse, family member or close friend. This will be helpful if you need to obtain belongings but you are unable to get to the facility yourself for some reason.
